PointsBet began the NBA season by calling together it’s ‘Karma Kommittee’, following the game between the New Orleans Pelicans and Toronto Raptors. The Raptors forced overtime in the final seconds, and then went on to cover the 6.5 point spread with a 130-122 OT win.

The brass at PointsBet decided this was no way for underdog bettors to start the season, so they refunded all pre-game spread bets on the Pelicans.

PointsBet CEO Johnny Aitken explained this decision on Twitter, saying ”To lead the game with 30 seconds left, and not cover +6.5 is pretty much the definition of a bad beat. We didn’t want anyone to begin the new NBA season like that. Refunding Pelicans bettors was an easy decision.”

The idea of a Casino paying back losers is an outside-the-box concept for gamblers, but PointsBet has never been a traditional book. Now, after setting this precedent with the Pelicans outcome, it will be interesting to see how PB handles similar outcomes in future games.

Was this a marketing move for opening night, or will the Karma Kommittee have frequent meetings this season?

The Props Network will keep tabs on all future Karma Kommittee meetings.
