Tennessee Titans at New England Patriots

  • Spread: Vikings +7.5
  • Over/Under: 50
  • Sun, 1:05 PM

Some folks are bringing up the Saints vs Vikings game from two years ago. That’s kind of missing the point since last second plays like The ‘Minnesota miracle’ are anomalies. The thing to focus on here is actual performance and the Saints are superior everywhere except maybe in the running game. And that’s only because Zimmer is highly committed to feeding Dalvin Cook.

I’m going to ignore the Bears game because Minnesota was locked into this seed before the game. However the Vikings’s losses to Green Bay, Seattle, and the Chiefs are red flags. Whenever they face an offense with any sort of imagination the Vikings tend to get took. They have a reputation for defensive excellence, but explain Seattle hanging 37 on them. I get it, a bad game happens. But the Chiefs game was supposed to be a sort of coming out party for the Vikings and they blew it. So, this is not a high-quality team that’s going to head on the road and win a game they are almost eight point dogs in.

The Saints are pissed off. Getting jobbed by the referees in the NFC Championship game is still motivating them and they are good enough to have gone 5-0 with Bridgewater at QB. They win on the road, they win at home, they win as favorites. Amazingly, the only truly awful performance was against Atlanta at home coming off the bye when they seemed to just get caught by surprise. Atlanta then proved to be pretty good down the stretch ringing up a 6-2 record in the second half, so it’s not like the Saints lost to a truly awful team. The other two losses were to the Rams in week two when Brees hurt his thumb and the Niners in an instant classic. Beyond that they won six games by double-digits.

Bottom line is that the Saints are on a mission and the Vikings are inconsistent and prone to making big mistakes. There’s nothing in their makeup that convinces me that the Vikings are poised to make a deep playoff run while everything points to the Saints putting everyone on notice with a big performance.
