Three!

The emotional headline from Philly’s 109-104 home victory over New York on Wednesday was “Ben Simmons hits first NBA three-pointer!” In response, Sixers fans gave a playoffs-level cheer. The curse was broken. This was the missing skills piece for a franchise cornerstone who’s a consistent triple-double threat — but not from the most important scoring range in the modern NBA.Because of that weakness in Simmons’ game, some lucky bettors made a tidy little sum on his surprise corner three. Its value was built up over 172 games, and 17 misses, over three seasons.

Realistically though, this game was about the continual struggles the Sixers have with teams they should easily beat. In fact, they’ve downed the Knicks nine straight times. In this one, Philly had to come back from 17 down in the third quarter. That effort was led by Joel Embiid’s 23 points. The Knicks were paced by Marcus Morris’ 22 points and 13 rebounds. But it was his four three-pointers that almost stole the victory. He hit two in the game’s closing 10 seconds. This, after Sixers bench forward Mike Scott hit his own fourth three-pointer, which would seal the win.

NBA Betting Preview – Spurs @ 76ers

Fri. 11/22 at 8:00 PM

The Sixers look to win three straight games, as they face the 5-10 San Antonio Spurs. Philly’s seventh straight sub-.500 opponent brings a seven-game losing streak to the Wells Fargo Center. Their big scoring threat is DeMar DeRozan’s 21.7-point average. But that comes with the baffling stat that DeRozan has missed all four (!) three-pointers he’s taken through 15 games. Much better is Patty Mills, who is the Spurs’ new starting point guard, and is hitting 42.5% of his threes. They are backed up by big man LaMarcus Aldridge, who is averaging 17.9 points and 6.9 rebounds.

Philly can counter with four healthy members of their main starting five. Josh Richardson missed the Knicks game with a tight right hip flexor, and is questionable for this one. In addition, Al Horford may sit out, since this is the first game of a back-to-back.

The Pick:

The reeling Spurs have lost 9-of-10. They are not playing like a team that can beat a rested Sixers squad at home. They do have good young guards like Dejounte Murray and Bryn Forbes. But their quality size guys end at Aldridge. I think Philly wins as 7.5-point favorites tonight.

Where to bet this:

PointsBet is offering the best odds for Philadelphia as -7.5 favorites, with a payout of -105 ($105 win $100). Elsewhere , Unibet, Sugarhouse, Caesars, and DraftKings have the same line, with a payout of -110.

If you want to go bigger:

Taking Philly by even one additional point beyond the line, at -8.5 will get a payout of +105 at Unibet, SugarHouse, and DraftKings.

Top Player Prop:

Joel Embiid has said that he plans to play both sides of this weekend’s back-to-back. So, expect the star center to have a big game against the lowly Spurs. I’ll goo with Unibet for a -119 wager that Embiid scores more than 24.5 points vs the Spurs.
